The highest number of kids that participate in youth sports is the age group of 10 years old. By age 13, approximately 75% of those same kids are no longer playing sports.

The two main reasons given by kids for not continuing to play sports is

1 - Not having fun
2 - Do not believe they are good enough

so as a priority over X's and O's, wins, plays, uniforms, and many other things that seem so important, let's remember to make it fun and build their confidence.

This is something that all coaches should think about...
Players comments about Coach A and Coach B

Coach A - "When I played for Coach A, I thought he was the best coach ever."

Coach B - "When I played for Coach B, he made me feel like the best player ever."

Are you trying to be Coach A or Coach B?

Coaches and Parents - What did we do when we were 10 years old?

Do you remember being 10 years old? Sure you do, most everybody does.

As many parents and coaches reflect back on the time when they were only 10 years old, some great discussions can happen with your kids and even your youth players. Think of all the things we didn't have - Personal Computers, Internet, Cell Phones, Video Games, iPods, MP3 Players, CDs, DVD, Camcorders, VCRs, Big Screen TVs - heck we didn't even have a color TV. Many times the kids today will wonder what we used to do without all these important THINGS that most kids use every day.

Many things have changed, some for the better and maybe some for not, BUT one thing we had and we all still have today is the great game of Basketball. The basketball is still the same size and the basketball goal is still 10 ft high. For the most part, the basketball court and rules have remained the same. The 3 pointer has been a fun addition to the game. The shot clock has made the higher levels of basketball exciting. But, for the most part, the game of basketball that we played at 10 years old is still the same game our sons and daughters play today.

This common ground with todays youth players is important because it allows us to share and relate personally and NOT through an electronic device. Basketball is a game made great by PEOPLE, not technology, or software, or computers, or THINGS (like most above), but important and wonderful PEOPLE learning, sharing, teaching, and promoting this game that continues to get more fun to play, watch, and coach every day.

The FIRST Day of......

The FIRST day of .... school, work, vacation, Bible School, and BASKETBALL CAMP. Everyone is excited and ready to give their best effort and have a great experience. Bright eyes, smiles, good nervous attention, and can't wait to play attitude. How long does this environment last? The longer that attitude can last the better the experience will be. Talk to the kids about being just as pumped on the last day as they are when they walk in the gym the first day! It will make everything better...especially the kids.

Basketball Players are MADE in the Off-Season

How many times have you heard that ball players are made in the off-season? Most kids have the goals and intention to make that happen this summer. But, when the kids go outside to practice in the driveway and work on their game, what do they do? Most of the time, it just results in shooting around for a little while. Shooting around is good, but we hope to provide many fundamental basketball drills and workout information on http://www.howtocoachyouthbasketball.com that will help BUILD that basketball player this summer.
